A collaborative journey to mental wellness.

What is Rooted Liberation Therapy?

Rooted Liberation Therapy is a private therapy practice that offers a trauma-informed unbound pathway to wellness, anchored in liberation psychology and decolonial practices. This approach seeks to generate well-being for the collective, individuals, groups, and couples. This is a practice that is explicitly anti-racist & anti-oppression. RLT focuses on addressing trauma responses via somatic practices and EMDR. Tish is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional-II and a mindfulness-informed clinician.

It is a safe & affirming place for all identities.

You will be challenged to look beyond you, to build community, and engage in work that liberates us all. This practice seeks to minimize carceral interactions by incorporating practice-proven mutual aid and peer support resources.

Liberated Wellness

Liberation Psychology

Liberation Psychology does not label the help seeker as disordered or sick; instead, it names the systems of oppression as disordered that make people unwell. Liberation psychology looks at the impact of society on the individual and the collective. Liberation psychology seeks ways to address the outside factors. Liberation psychology is about connecting with others.

Decolonizing Practices

Decolonized therapy practices seek to restore people to the land, spirit, ancestral wisdom, and the collective while naming the harm done by Western & Eurocentric practices. Decolonizing therapy theory asserts that the core wound is colonization, meaning that all unwellness grows from that wound. Decolonized practices give credit to and engage in ancestral medicine & practice proven cultural healing traditions. Decolonial practices are inherently trauma-informed.

EMDR Therapy

Practice proven strategies that incorporate the mind, body, and emotional self in the healing process. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation such as eye movements, buzzers, and self-tapping. EMDR assists in rewiring the brain’s response to traumatic material, causing it to be less emotionally impactful.

Somatics

Somatics involves learning to listen to your body’s emotional messages and responding with what your body needs. Trauma impacts the nervous system & microbiology of our cells. Somatics helps you decode trauma triggers and their physiological responses by providing physical release.

After working for years in state-funded institutions and seeking to reform them, Tish, like many other practitioners, realized that reform wasn’t an option. Western and Eurocentric practices are coded in safety, but encourage disconnection from the collective and blame the individual instead of looking at the whole picture and addressing the sick systems that make people unwell. Western & Eurocentric approaches are limiting and intricately intertwined with the carceral (legal) system. Unfortunately, Western and Eurocentric practices have caused deep harm among TQ2SBIPOC communities. Tish is striving not to be a part of the harm caused but an agent of change.

Many methods used in therapy today are rooted in the ancient ways of healing from BIPOC communities. Their methods were extracted, re-mixed to suit the non-BIPOC community, and are then sold back to BIPOC and help seekers at extraordinary prices. Tish is seeking to stop that cycle and restore the true mind, body, emotion, spirit, and communal health.

Dr. Jennifer Mullan, LCSW, author of Decolonizing Therapy, says this:

“We decolonize our therapists to understand that when the environment is toxic, its inhabitants will eventually either wither & die or assimilate and conform. Our collective liberation beings with turning in, taking truth no matter how bitter. This is a call to understand the histories of colonization and tend to the wounds that we collectively hold.”

Now is the time for change. Without decolonization, there can be no collective liberation.
